WHAT LASTS – Pancho Lasso Art School, Lanzarote, Spain, January 2025

Everything was an adventure from beginning to end. Lanzarote holds a powerful energy, where beauty and destruction coexist in the very same place.

Time moves differently there,as if the island had its own heartbeat and one had to learn how to follow it.

On the night of the opening,I performed inside a black void. I created using volcanic stone.

I ran nine times around the circle to sanctify the space, and then sat within it,

pressing onto paper the traces of my face, my body,my breasts.

This island has slowly become a deep refuge, my second home since I began living in Europe.

Sometimes I feel I have lived here before, in another life.

WHAT LASTS

Throughout the years, I have explored the imprint I wish to leave on this world. Not because I consider myself indispensable, but because I yearn for my words to resonate in others, for my feelings to become a bridge of connection. For as long as I can remember, I have been an untamable spirit, oscillating between light and shadow, seeking with intensity the essence of existence in every step I take. Intensity is my loyal companion, and extremes, my allies. In the blink of an eye, I can cross from the threshold of light into the penumbra, where, from my perspective, beauty and destruction intertwine incessantly.

One day, destiny led me to a magnetic island, a place where the power of nature enveloped me like never before. In its landscapes, I could perceive how something so devastating could transform into an expression of pure beauty. There, among dormant volcanoes and seas, I discovered a profound reflection: the insignificance of the human being when faced with the immeasurable grandeur of nature.

One afternoon, I arrived at Janubio Beach. The black sand and grayish sea seemed to whisper secrets to me, becoming the living image of what I call my “black hole”: that hidden corner in my memory where fragility, sadness, and vulnerability coexist. Yet far from weakening me, this abyss has become the driving force behind my creations. I always return to it, both in thought and emotion, searching for that spark of inspiration that only darkness can offer.

That afternoon, I decided to perform a symbolic act, a ritual to connect with the soul of the island. I covered myself with volcanic sand, letting its ancestral energy seep into my skin while the waves purified me. With volcanic dust mixed with oil, I painted my body, merging with the stones that have endured countless centuries, silent witnesses to the passage of time.

The stones are silent witnesses of the ephemeral and the eternal, inviting me to reflect on life and death. This dialogue between what disappears and what endures becomes the guiding thread of my journey, leading me to connect with what is essential, to understand that we are part of something far greater than ourselves.

Lanzarote became a mirror of my inner world, a space where creation and introspection intertwine, revealing beauty.
